Fred Hubbell for Governor

After spending most of my life in Orlando, Florida, I never thought I’d end up in Iowa. That all changed in 2018, when I had the opportunity to join Fred Hubbell’s team as Deputy Digital Director. This kickstarted a multi-year jaunt in Iowa, and this state I never thought I’d end up in became one of the places I love most.

I ran Fred’s social media program and traveled extensively across the state with him, shooting photos and videos. All organic and oppositional content was in my wheelhouse, in addition to running all preparation and content during debates. I also oversaw our Q4 persuasion and voter activation advertising, and produced some of our field walk literature and mail pieces.

One Year Later

To celebrate a year on the campaign trail, I cut together this retrospective. I wanted to ensure Fred’s core message of putting people first was front and center, while also capturing the real momentum behind him after the primary had ended and he had selected State Senator Rita Hart as his running mate.

Reynolds Reality Check

Medicaid privatization was the number one issue in the state of Iowa in the 2018 campaign. Governor Reynolds had supported the privatization process under the prior administration, and had badly managed it in her tenure. Countless lost coverage and many thousands died as a result.

Working with our research and communication teams, I put together a series of videos using headlines in news coverage alongside video of Reynolds at complete odds with one another. This highlighted Reynolds hypocrisy and dereliction of duty. This angle was then used by our paid media consultants to produce a television ad which we found to be among our most effective when shown in focus groups of our target audiences.
